Astronaut by Milica Denkovic

Astronaut is a  poem divided into two gifs. It is a poem about pandemic experiences and how they affect the daily lives of some of us. More than that, how they affect our internal landscapes of emotion. Arranged in 40 squares to represent 40 days of quarantine. This was a practice, from the 14th century, for ships arriving in Venice from infected ports during the time of the plague. 2x2m square represent a recommended physical distance as a safety measure.

Gettin' on with it by Elizabeth Torres

This short film was created during the fall of 2020 in celebration of the release of The Ways of the Firefly, a poetry book in German and English released by Moloko Print during the pandemic. It is filmed in Marielyst, Nykøbing, in the south of Denmark, and the music is composed by Jevgeniy Turovskiy, who corresponded with me digitally from Berlin for the creation of this project.
The process? For the camera, I used my smartphone, and then animated on Procreate and edited on DaVinci & After Effects.

The gap in the time of the pandemic

The Gap in the time of the pandemic is the second film (after Astronaut) in a series  titled Spaces in Crisis : Rethinking of space in the time of pandemic. The actually required physical distance between peoplei s a  minimum  of1m) The square of 2x2m is used as a framework for physical space (installation/intervention) and a frame for digital art(digital illustrations & poems).

The series combines different media in transmedia storytelling approach aiming to research physical, visual, philosophical, poetic, emotional, mental aspects of the required distance. What it means to us and  how it affects us and our interpersonal relationships, our daily relations towards people and environment.

It is  a piece of personal space, a piece of existence, a framework for viewing reality.

Cynghanedd is complex. As a second language Welsh speaker, I’m in awe and fear of it. I know some of my English poetry has elements of this complex harmonising, but it’s more by instinct than an understanding of the rules. What I wanted to do in my poem for this Plethu project, was not to try to find how to write in cynghanedd, but to be open to harmony, to be receptive to my collaborative partner, to ‘co-translate’ this form into another form in order to better understand it.
I was astounded by the film Anita Kolaczynska made. In the same way Jo said my poem captured the essence of what she felt of the place, her dance and film did the same for me. I love the sea in her eyes and her hands in the gap. I love the slowing down and speeding up, the silent murmuring. This whole thing has a magical quality to it, abundant with metaphor (and the synchronicities that happened during filming, like the seal, the face in the rock and the doves taking off).
